Study finds large companies have no European website

In short:
A recent study by APCO Europe reveals that most of the world's 50 largest companies are not ready to do business with Europe. This study comes just as the European domain name '.EU' is adopted. 
  

Brief news:
Key findings of the study include: 

*    Less than one-third of the world's 50 largest corporations have a phone number for their European corporate headquarters on their corporate website, whilst there are some 171.35 million Europeans online; 
*    Only half of the world's largest companies answered an e-mail request for information on their European operations within one week; 
*    The majority of corporate websites of the world's 50 largest corporations fail to communicate in a language other than English, whilst only 41% of the people in Europe speak this language; 
*    Of the 10 highest scoring sites, four are European companies. 
The study also concluded that there is a growing 'European identity' in culture, society, business and that Europe is increasingly a 'stakeholder society'. This was also the Commission's main reason to in March 2000 propose the European domain name '.EU' as this would be an important enabler for European electronic commerce, allowing a new breed of '.eu' e-commerce web-sites to do business across Europe.
