Thu Mar 28 06:37:00 GMT 2002

COULD YOU PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO ANYONE WORKING WITH MEDIA IN THE MIDDLE
EAST THAT MIGHT BE INTERESTED
The Center for Development Communication is holding its next International
Executive Media and Television workshop in Beirut from June 17th to 20th,
2002. The workshop is for professionals working in the fields of
development, the environment, democratization and human rights who interact
with the media and who want to be more effective communicators.

Participants in past workshops have included officials from government
departments, non-government organizations and United Nations staff of
various levels, from technical information officers to senior managers and
resident representatives. All share a common desire to improve their media
skills. This workshop is very relevant to organizations such as yours.
What past participants to these and other CDC sponsored events have said
about the learning :

"What I learned from the media workshop I attended proved very useful
[when] we were suddenly confronted with hundreds of demands for TV & radio
interviews during a crisis involving children that had been kidnapped."
UNICEF Staff Member in West Africa
"The most practical and entertaining workshop that I've participated in"
Assistant to the UN Resident Coordinator in Asia
"Helped staffers here see the real need for effective communication...
[and] not to engage in "unbabblespeak" Senior Communication Official for
ESCAP in Bangkok
"Assisted me in enhancing my communication and advocacy skills... I remain
indebted to your endeavors which not only assisted me, but certainly
contributed to the improvement of the image of the United Nations in the
world." UN Resident Coordinator from the Middle East
"The workshops helped me change the way communications was understood
within the UNDP- country office" Public Affairs Officer for UNDP in Africa
"With CDC's deep understanding of the media/image/publicity/communications
issues that UN agency heads are confronted with in a country setting, CDC
was able to right away pinpoint
the gaps and shortcomings we have in dealing with the media" UN Resident
Coordinator in the Pacific.
"I have come back to Jordan with warm memories of our encounter. Our meeting
has enriched me as a person. " Communication Officer for UNICEF in the
Middle East.

Our Methodology

The workshop gives participants the hands-on experience of being in
numerous media situations with real working journalists. Each participant
is interviewed separately on camera on all the three full days of the
workshop, and receives individual coaching and peer review. The kinds of
interviews they are asked to give will vary. One day it will be with a talk
show host; another day, an ambush-style news journalist and another with a
documentary filmmaker. In the evenings, the resource team digitally edits
each of the interviews. The following morning clips from the interviews are
played to the group and discussed. Participants see the various ways in
which what they say can be used by the media and, if they are not careful,
taken out of context.
Gain confidence and control during interviews Communicate purposefully and
strategically. Be proactive with journalists and stay on message rather
than just answering questions. Frame and deliver your messages so as to get
the attention of target audiences.
Be aware of the various needs and requirements of journalists and media
organizations in different parts of the world. Respond appropriately to
different kinds of questions, from loaded questions to controversial
questions to dumb questions
Prepare for crises
Stay clam when under attack
