"The book is an important contribution to the
sociology of the profession of journalism
[?]. The study will serve as a benchmark for
future studies of the making of newsnot only in
Israel but throughout the Western world [?] the
author offers brilliant insight into the checks
and balances, and the unspoken assumptions, that
govern journalistic practice ? for better and for worse".

Product Description
The book illuminates the sometimes obscure
processes through which the news is currently
created, using unprecedentedly robust
and comprehensive evidence. The innovative
methodology of the face-to-face reconstruction
interview, which was developed and
implemented by the author, enables quantitative
depiction of different aspects of news making.
These processes could not be accessed
systematically by traditional research methods,
primarily because of source confidentiality and
their covert, abstract, scattered, and evasive nature.
Although the study focuses on the Israeli
national press, it is aimed first and foremost at
addressing universal key questions that continue
to trouble communities of journalists, academics and journalism educators.
? Which party instigates the news: Sources or reporters?
? Do certain news sources gain superior access to news coverage?
? Have new technologies really revolutionized newswork?
? To what extent do journalists still rely on firsthand witnessing?
? Who leaks information and how?
? Do elite reporters employ sourcing methods
superior to those of their tabloid counterparts?
? Has the quality of newswork deteriorated?
? Are journalists doing their job?
? What are the strengths and weaknesses of
journalists? knowledge regarding the news they cover?
Dr. Zvi Reich combines rich journalistic experience as a former
senior editor with his journalism research studies.
