VC2020 Lecturer in Journalism
Full Time, Permanent
Grade F Lecturer £32,958 - £36,001 per annum
The Leicester Media School in the Faculty of Technology, De Montfort
University, wishes to appoint a VC2020 Lecturer (a role which combines
teaching and research 50/50) to take a leading role in the development
of undergraduate Journalism at DMU, and to make a contribution to the
research culture of the School. Journalism provision at DMU (which
scored 100% for overall satisfaction in the 2016 NSS) has grown
steadily. New developments in Broadcast Journalism and other areas of
journalistic practice, enhanced by a Masters degree in Investigative
Journalism (run in partnership with Channel 4), have reinforced our high
profile work in this popular field.
The post holder will therefore be expected to lead and deliver elements
of practical journalism teaching, and will be encouraged to take on
curriculum development and programme leadership roles where appropriate.
This position has the potential for swift progression for the right
person. In addition, he or she will liaise with the accrediting body
(the NCTJ), and will maintain a professional profile, including the
production of research outputs and the consolidation of industry links.
Specific teaching and research expertise within Journalism may include,
but need not be limited to, one of the following: ‘citizen’ journalism,
digital journalism, broadcast journalism, and investigative journalism.
As a VC2020 appointment, the post holder will be offered additional time
to carry out research activities, and should be in a strong position for
the next REF in terms of both publications and impact. Expertise in
research, and a completed PhD, is an essential requirement of the role.
The Leicester Media School provides an outstanding student experience,
combining extensive commitment to employability with academic rigour and
is a research leader nationally and internationally. Our undergraduate
Journalism degrees have become exemplary models of accredited,
professional programmes: maintaining the quality and appeal of these
courses will form part of the duties of the successful candidate.
The role is one of several academic posts aligned strategically to the
Goals of the Leicester Media School. This particular role is designed to:
1. help deliver a high quality NCTJ-accredited undergraduate programme
in journalism
2. develop and further enhance industry and professional links
3. provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to develop
leadership skills at module, course and possibly programme level
4. reinforce our International reputation for research and enhance our
International recruitment
5. support the development of digital and multi-platform journalism
6. reinforce our work in Journalism studies
Experience of both journalistic endeavor and academic research will be
an advantage, as will an ambition for leadership opportunities.
