One doctoral studentship in Media and Communication Studies in the
research project The (dis)connected refugee: The role of communication
technologies in trust-building in Sweden and Germany
Ref: 200/1.6.1/2017
Södertörn University in south Stockholm is a dynamic institute of higher
education with a unique profile and high academic standard. A large
proportion of the university staff holds doctorates and there is a
strong link between undergraduate education and research. Södertörn
University has around 11 000 students and 840 employees.
Södertörn University is an equal opportunities employer.
The doctoral project will broaden media and migration studies with a
historically oriented approach by analyzing refugee’s media practices in
different historical moments. How has this new life situation been
influenced by media use and vice versa? How has media use supported or
prevented trust-building in social relations? What narrative strategies
have been used to organize and structure information and communication
at the moment of migration? How have former refugees coped with
situations of unfamiliarity in the new country? The project is led by
Associate professor Heike Graf. For more information click here.
Media and Communication Studies (MCS) at Södertörn University is one of
Sweden’s leading environments for media research and education. Research
and education are founded on a historically informed understanding of
the contemporary information society, in which new communication
technologies and their contexts are related to their predecessors. The
research environment at MCS currently comprises around 25
researchers/teachers including two full professors, eight associate
professors (docents), and six doctoral students. All doctoral students
have an international profile, and the working language of the PhD
training program is English. For more information, see www.sh.se/mkv
(Swedish version) or click here (English version).
The doctoral student is linked to the research area of Critical and
Cultural Theory. It is an interdisciplinary research environment and
graduate school that focuses on a critically motivated study of cultural
artifacts and practices. It awards PhD degrees in Aesthetics, Art
History, Comparative Literature, Gender Studies, Media and Communication
Studies, Philosophy, and the Theory of Practical Knowledge. Works of
art, literary and philosophical texts, media technologies, and social
and political practices are the focus of research. The researchers are
united by the conviction that critically informed humanities are vital
for the self-understanding and scrutiny needed to address the questions
of the future in contemporary society. Through its close collaboration
with the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES,
www.sh.se/cbees) at Södertörn University, themes related to this
geographical area constitute an important profile area. For more
information, click here.
