Computational Media and Datafication of Health)

*Ref: 2.2.1-2017/211*

*General information about Malmö University*
Since its inception in 1998, Malmö University has grown into the country's eighth largest institution of higher education with 25 000 students. Its education and research programmes are distinguished by their multidisciplinary, problem-oriented approach and social relevance. The university offers students a range of educations in five faculties: Culture and Society, Education and Society, Health and Society, Odontology, and Technology and Society.

*The Faculty of Technology and Society*
The Faculty of Technology and society (TS) offers educations and research in computer science and media technology as well as engineering and natural sciences and applied mathematics. A characteristic of our research and teaching is the engagement of companies and other organizations as active participants. We are located in Malmö city close to Malmö Central Station.

*The Department of Computer Science and Media Technology
*At the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology, currently around 60 lecturers, researchers and professors are employed. The department has an international flair with employees from some 20 different countries.

The department offers eight different bachelor degree programmes and three master degree programmes within media development, computer science, computer systems engineering and informatics. Our degree programmes, as well as, our research activities, have a close connection with the surrounding society and the industries in it. Most of our educational programmes were assessed as maintaining very high quality by the Swedish Agency of Higher Education in the latest evaluation.

At the department, the research is devoted to the digitalization of our society, and a special area of attention is the Internet of Things, where we mainly investigate the usefulness and human use of the connected devices in our surroundings. Other research areas that our researchers investigate are, e.g., software engineering, intelligent transport systems, and computational media. Apart from a strong cooperation with the industry and with several research organizations, such as the Internet of Things and People Research Center, Software Center, and the Swedish Knowledge Center for Public Transport, our researchers actively take part in research projects with universities around the world.

*Job description Ph.D. programme in Computer Science*
The successful candidate will become part of the Computational Media Lab and undertake interdisciplinary research focusing on the societal challenges related to the datafication of health. The Computational Media Lab is a research lab that engages with challenges brought about by processes of digitalisation and datafication. Using, reconfiguring, and creating a multitude of research methodologies, research within this lab engages with the tension between computer science, interaction design and media studies by studying how, for instance, people engage with and make sense of big data and digital technologies in their everyday lives. The PhD project is expected to explore questions of datafied power, how people are living their everyday lives with and through data, and how relationships between data and people are mediated in various ways. This position is specifically oriented towards experiences and expectations within health care and self-care practices but should also probe links to other relevant areas of datafication that are not explicitly related to health.

*Employment as a Ph.D. student*
An employed Ph.D. student shall primarily devote time to his/her own research training. Teaching assignments of up to 20% may be part of your duties.Regulations regarding employment of Ph.D. students can be found in Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 1-7 §§. The Ph.D. student is expected to actively participate in the research and teaching environment.

The aim of the Ph.D. programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required for the Ph.D. student to independently conduct research and thereby contribute to the development of knowledge within the project. The Ph.D. programme is worth 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and usually combines with 20% teaching.

The position as PhD student normally consists of 80% research within the Computational media lab, and 20% teaching at the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology. The successful candidate will partake in the future developments of the master’s programme "Media Technology: Strategic Media Development” that draws on a wide range of fields such as internet of things, digital humanities, digital ethnography, computer science, cultural studies, and media studies.
