Call for Book Chapters AI & Society - The Publicness of Artificial Intelligences: Social Values, Normative Conflicts and Democratic Horizons (Deadline April 30th, 2026)

Description: We warmly invite you to submit your proposals for the forthcoming edited volume The Publicness of Artificial Intelligences: Social Values, Normative Conflicts and Democratic Horizons, to be published by Vernon Press. Editors: Sara Pane and Marinella Belluati (University of Turin).

Artificial intelligence has rapidly shifted from a technical domain to a central arena of public debate, governance and democratic contestation. Its integration into institutional and communicative contexts raises critical questions about power, legitimacy, accountability and trust, while challenging the boundaries between human judgement and machine-mediated decision-making. This volume examines AI as a socio-technical transformation with significant societal, institutional and epistemic implications. Adopting a transdisciplinary and critical perspective, it focuses on issues of meaning-making, epistemic authority and democratic accountability, particularly in relation to public trust and institutional legitimacy.

Building upon this framework, the volume welcomes contributions on the following topics:

  *

    artificial intelligence and ethics;

  *

    algorithmic bias, inequality and social justice;

  *

    artificial intelligence, expertise, epistemic authority and public
    trust;

  *

    artificial intelligence in social and everyday life;

  *

    artificial intelligence and power dynamics;

  *

  *

    anticipatory governance, foresight and future-oriented public policies;

  *

    comparative and international models of AI governance;

  *

    human–machine interaction, including agency, delegation and
    responsibility;

  *

    civic artificial intelligence and participatory approaches to
    governance;

  *

    artificial intelligence, education and the formation of critical
    citizens;

  *

    creativity, co-creation and social innovation;

  *

    artificial intelligence and public communication;

  *
