Rationale:

The infusion of every discipline with new digital tools, methods of 
working and modes of information exchange has always been a defining 
characteristic of the human condition.
In recent years this has reached dizzying speeds with AI, virtual 
reality, online learning and distance education being just a few of the 
most high-profile examples in the first part of the 21st Century.

Reflecting this, every discipline we operate in needs to be thought of 
as intrinsically linked to questions of technologies and medias. It is 
inconceivable to propose an understanding of contemporary art that 
ignores digital artworks, or architecture that ignores the realities of 
the smart city. Similarly, in the disciplinary fields of the two 
conferences brought together in this call, heritage and education, it is 
not possible for either discipline to function in its current form 
without technology.

When we consider the heritage sector, for example, themes of 
photogrammetry, LiDAR scanning, virtual reality, 3D modelling, and much 
more, are all central tenets of the broader digital heritage field.

In the context of education, AI, virtual learning, MOOCs, VLEs, the use 
of gamification, and a plethora of related digital tools and medias, are 
now inseparable from the contemporary teaching and learning field.
