Call for Works: Remix: Race and Representation | Screenworks Special

Screenworks invites submissions for a special issue on Remix: Race and 
Representation, guest edited by Amanda Egbe and Amber Mota, UWE Bristol.
We invite practice-as-research submissions exploring the relationship 
between remix, race and representation, particularly work engaging with 
the reuse and reimagining of archival film, found footage, moving image 
collections, and other forms of cultural content.
The special issue considers the transformative potential of reuse and 
remix. We are particularly interested in how practitioners rework 
existing materials to expand understandings of race and representation, 
reimagine the experiences of Global Majority and racially minoritised 
communities, and critically engage with difficult, contested or 
problematic archives.
Communication and Media Studies scholars and practice researchers are 
warmly encouraged to submit.
We welcome work addressing questions including:

  * How can archival footage be reimagined to reflect the experiences of
    Global Majority and racially minoritised communities?
  * What creative strategies can challenge normative representations of
    race, gender, sexuality and class?
  * How might remix practices reconsider questions of ownership, access
    and ethical reuse?
  * How can difficult, contested or problematic archival materials be
    engaged with critically and creatively?
  * What forms of social, cultural and political critique become
    possible through remixing film and screen media?

Topics might include:

  * Reimagining historical footage to reflect the experiences of Global
    Majority and racially minoritised communities
  * Challenges to normative representations around race, gender,
    sexuality and class
  * Ownership, access and ethical reuse of archival material
  * Working creatively with difficult, contested or problematic archives
  * Remix as a method of social, cultural and political critique
  * Found footage filmmaking and archival practice
  * Decolonial approaches to archives and moving image heritage
  * Practice research approaches to reuse and remix

Submission format
Submissions should consist of:

  * A screen media practice research work
  * A supporting 2,000-word research statement

There are no author processing charges (APCs) or publication fees 
associated with this special issue.
Deadline: 27 November 2026
Selected works will be published in Summer 2027.
