The PSA Media and Politics Group invites members to submit paper 
abstracts for our specialist stream at the PSA Annual International 
Conference 2027.

2027 and is not to be confused with our annual MPG conference—this year 
co-organised with the Technology, Information and Policy Group—which is 
taking place at City St George's University, London, in January 2027:

*PSA conference theme: *Seismic Politics – impacts and responses from 
the global to the local
While the main theme of this PSA conference is on the ongoing 
disruptions, upheavals and fractures in the political realm, and how 
these are impacting and being responded to by communities around the 
globe, *the Media and Politics Group operates an open and inclusive 
policy, and papers dealing with any aspect of media and politics are 
welcome*. This may include areas of political communication and 
journalism but also embraces a broader view of the political within 
online media, television, podcasting, gaming, cinema and media arts - 
both factual and fictional.

Potential topics could include (but are not limited to):

  *
    The rise of alternative forms of political media amid diminishing
    levels of trust in mainstream/legacy news and information sources
  *
    Grassroots activism, campaigning, political communication and
    resistance to dominant elites and norms
  *
    Political divisions and conflict at the grassroots - both online and
    on the streets
  * The role of affect, emotion, and authenticity within political
    communication
  *
    Ongoing disruption due to disinformation, misinformation and
    malinformation - including through the role of AI
  * The opportunities and challenges of digital campaigning
  * Datafication and challenges to democracy
  *
    Media, communication, inequality and marginalisation - and the
    tension between media/political discourses and lived experiences of
    marginalised groups
  *
    Misrepresentation and underrepresentation of minorities in the
    mainstream political public sphere - and the rise of subaltern and
    counter-discursive spheres and social movements
  * The methodological challenges of researching media and politics
  * Decolonising/diversifying political communication research

This year's conference is open for *in-person attendance only*.

Please submit abstracts of *up to 300 words *using the Oxford Abstracts 
system by *Monday, 12 October*, via this _link_

old one, Ex Ordo - you will need to set up an account)

Once you are logged into the PSA27 Oxford Abstracts platform, please 
follow this process to submit your abstract:

 1.
    When submitting your abstract, *please select our Specialist Group’s
    name (Media and Politics Group) in the ‘Topics’ section*. This will
    identify us as the intended recipient of your abstract and ensure
    that it is sent to us by the PSA team

 2.
    Any pre-agreed panels proposed by the MPG will appear within the MPG
    topic as a "sub-topic". When you select our topic, you will be able
    to see and choose our Specialist Group from the full list. You can
    then choose either "open call" under the MPG (i.e. submit your paper
    abstract to the group as a whole for consideration - which is the
    usual route) OR you may select a specific sub-topic panel within the
    group (i.e. if the group has any sub-topic panels to chose from).

NB: Where there is more than one author per paper, you should also 
ensure that the ‘Lead Author’ includes the details of the co-authors.

Papers and panels for the conference are due to be confirmed by *6 
November 2026*, so please look out for an email notifying you of the 
decision about your abstract at or around this time. The deadline for 
Early Bird registration is *18 January 2027*.
