CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS
Algorithmic Bias, Power, and Inequality in the Digital Age
Edited by Prof.Deniz Akçay Balcı
To be published by IGI Global Scientific Publishing
Extended Abstract Submission Deadline: June 8, 2026
This edited volume seeks chapter proposals that critically examine the
social, cultural, political, ethical, and institutional implications of
algorithmic bias in the digital age.
Algorithmic systems increasingly shape decision-making processes in
areas such as media, communication, healthcare, education, employment,
public services, governance, platform economies, and everyday digital
life. While algorithms are often presented as neutral or objective
tools, they may reproduce, reinforce, or obscure existing inequalities
related to gender, race, class, geography, language, culture,
disability, and other social categories.
This volume approaches algorithmic bias not only as a technical or
data-related problem, but also as an interdisciplinary issue that
requires critical engagement from communication and media studies,
sociology, political science, philosophy, ethics, information systems,
artificial intelligence studies, critical data studies, cultural
studies, and related fields.
Communication and Media Studies scholars are especially welcome to
contribute to this volume, particularly with chapters addressing
algorithmic visibility, platform power, media representation, digital
inequality, social media algorithms, datafication, surveillance, AI
ethics, and the relationship between algorithmic systems and public
communication.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
* Algorithmic bias and discrimination
* AI ethics, transparency, and accountability
* Platform power and algorithmic governance
* Social media algorithms and representation
* Digital inequality and data power
* Gender, race, class, and algorithmic systems
* Algorithmic visibility and invisibility
* Bias in automated decision-making systems
* Critical data studies and data colonialism
* Algorithmic bias in media, education, healthcare, employment, and
public services
* Regulation, policy, and governance of algorithmic systems
* Interdisciplinary approaches to algorithmic justice
