[Commlist] CfP – The Works of the Romanian Screenwriters (Bloomsbury)

Thu Jul 17 16:31:29 GMT 2025

Lucian Georgescu is pleased to share a call for papers for a forthcoming volume I am proposing to Bloomsbury’s Screen Storytellers series, titled /The Works of the Romanian Screenwriters/.

Although Romanian screenwriting is still largely unknown to global scholars, its history—rooted in literature, ideology, propaganda, creative resistance, and post-communist transition—offers a unique and underexplored landscape.

This volume seeks to gather original studies on both key authors and broader writing practices spanning from the socialist studio system to the internationally awarded New Romanian Cinema. We welcome essays of 4000–6000 words focused on specific screenwriters or writing collectives as well as broader thematic inquiries (e.g., gender disparity, censorship, auteur-propaganda ties, script-as-process).

Practitioners and practice-based researchers are strongly encouraged to apply.
We especially welcome proposals from:
• Female scholars or those addressing gender and exclusion in the screen industries • International researchers unfamiliar with Romanian cinema (research assistance and translated materials available upon request; see attached PDF) • Those interested in the distinction between story and screenwriting in film history. To assist with research, contributors may request access to rare pre-1989 films, translated archival texts, and curated material from Cinepub.ro <http://cinepub.ro/>, Romania’s largest free AVOD film archive (see PDF, attached).

_Submission timeline:_
• Abstracts + short bio due: October 1st, 2025
• Full essays due: April 15, 2026
• Final revised texts: June 15, 2026
• Publication: TBC

_Inquiries and submissions:_
Please send abstracts (300–400 words) and a brief bio to (lucian.georgescu /at/ unatc.ro).
