*Protecting Journalists in Conflict Zones: Challenges and Strategies During the Israel-Gaza Conflict*

This Fully Remote Post-conference on “Protecting Journalists in Conflict Zones: Challenges and Strategies During the Israel-Gaza Conflict,” collaboratively organized by the /International Communication Association’s (ICA) Activism, Communication and Social Justice (ACSJ)/ interest group and the /University of East London (UEL), the European Universities in Egypt (EUE)/ invites submissions of scholarly and practice-oriented papers addressing the multifaceted issues surrounding journalist safety in conflict zones. This virtual event, scheduled for *19 June 2025* aims to bring together academics, practitioners, journalists, human rights advocates, and policymakers to explore critical challenges and innovative strategies for safeguarding journalists working in dangerous environments.

*Conference Themes:*

**

The online conference seeks to address a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:

 1. *Threats to Journalist Safety:*
      * Targeted violence and harassment.
      * Censorship and restrictions on press freedom.
      * Psychological trauma and mental health challenges faced by
        journalists.

 2. *Legal and Ethical Dimensions:*
      * The role of international humanitarian law in protecting
        journalists.
      * Ethical dilemmas in reporting from conflict zones.
      * Accountability mechanisms for violence against journalists.

 3. *Strategies and Support Mechanisms:*
      * Best practices for ensuring journalists’ safety.
      * The role of governments, international organizations, and media
        outlets in providing support.
      * Technological tools and innovations for journalists in conflict
        areas.

 4. *Case Study Focus: The Israel-Gaza Conflict:*
      * Challenges faced by journalists during the Israel-Gaza conflict.
      * The impact of geopolitical dynamics on press freedom.
      * Lessons learned and recommendations for future conflict reporting.

**

*Submission Guidelines*

We invite submissions of original research, case studies, theoretical analyses, and policy discussions that align with the conference themes. Submissions should adhere to the following guidelines:

  * *Abstracts:*300-500 words summarizing the research question,
    methodology, findings, and relevance to the conference themes.
  * *Full Papers:*5,000-8,000 words, including references, tables, and
    figures. Papers should follow APA, MLA, or Chicago citation style
    (7th or most recent edition).
  * *Formats:*Submissions must be in Word (.docx) or PDF (.pdf) format.
  * *Language:*English.
  * *Submission Deadline:**7 March 2025*

*Publication Opportunities*

Accepted papers may be considered for inclusion in a special issue of */Media, War and Conflict/*. Authors whose papers are selected for publication will be required to make necessary revisions based on peer review feedback.

The conference will feature keynote addresses by distinguished scholars and practitioners (Names would be confirmed)

Interactive panels and breakout sessions will provide a platform for dialogue and collaboration among participants, fostering actionable strategies for improving journalist protections.

*Context and Significance*

Journalists operating in conflict zones face an unprecedented array of challenges, ranging from physical dangers to legal and ethical dilemmas. The Israel-Gaza conflict exemplifies the complexity of reporting in volatile environments, where journalists must navigate targeted violence, propaganda, and restrictions while striving to deliver accurate and impartial coverage. Recent studies (Reporters Without Borders, 2024; Committee to Protect Journalists, 2023) underscore the urgent need for enhanced protection and support mechanisms for journalists worldwide. By examining the Israel-Gaza conflict as a case study, this conference aims to generate actionable insights and foster collaboration among key stakeholders to strengthen journalist safety globally.
