Call for papers – December 2023 special issue

"Information technologies, data management, and digital storytelling onheritage tours and trails"

Special Issue Editors: Angeliki Antoniou, Christos Chrysanthopoulos, Foteini Efthymiou

In recent years there has been an explosion in the production of digital cultural products for heritage and historical tours and trails. This practice forms areas of convergence between many fields and organizations, and discussing the new possibilities emerging within information science is essential. Digital and virtual guides, exhibitions, applications, etc., form a new framework for the coexistence of historical and contemporary experiences through new information technologies. With this practice, through a database, a network analysis map, or, more generally, the semantic web, it is possible to build links between sources, events, places, dates, or persons. Information and memory institutions, universities and research institutions, institutions and informal groups, and for-profit and non-profit companies are involved in such projects, creating a complex network of collaborative work. But how is this connection of information and collaboration formed? What technologies and standards are used? What are the characteristics of the research working groups, and what are the financial requirements of the projects? What about copyright and the sustainability of such projects? What changes do these projects bring to understanding the past and forming historical conciseness? How does this debate intersect with open science and the dissemination of knowledge? How is a new relationship between information science and the digital and public humanities taking shape? The papers of this special issue should address the above questions. We also want to document problems and failures during the research process to highlight these projects' experimental dimensions. The issue aims to shape a reflective discourse on interdisciplinary work on this topic.
