Routledge Companion to Animation Studies

*Call for chapters*

We are seeking proposals for chapter contributions for a new Routledge 
Companion to Animation Studies. The goal of the companion is to provide 
an accessible panorama of key themes in the field of animation 
studies.The companion will cover themes such as Media Forms; 
Representation; Race; Themes in Animation Studies; Aesthetics; Anime; 
National Animation; and Studios. Articles should be introductory and 
should be centrally aimed at upper level undergraduates and graduate 
students of Animation, Film and Media Studies. Please bear in mind that 
some readers will be students or professionals approaching the subject 
from related disciplines and so as much as possible they should also be 
of interest to academics.

The main goal of each chapter should be to give a survey of the topic, 
explaining why the issue or area is important, and critically discussing 
the leading views in the area. Contributors are also encouraged, within 
reason, to expound their own views on the topic and also to engage with 
the work of others. Chapters should cover: definitions, historical 
perspectives, critical issues/topics, current contributions and 
research, main research methods (if relevant), recommendations for 
future directions, references, further reading.

*Chapter themes

A provisional list of chapter titles is listed below, however these are 
suggested rather than limited. Actual chapter titles will be confirmed 
once contributors have been identified.

_Media Forms – this may include such subject as: _Children’s Animation, 
Adult Animation (including censorship), Dual Address, Fairy Tales, 
Propaganda and Political Animation, Advertising, Documentary, 
Independent Animation, Experimental Animation, Animation/ Live Action 
Adaptation.

_Representation: _Gender, Queer, Social Class, Physical Disability, 
Neurodiversity

_Race_: Black/ African American, Latin American, South Asian, East 
Asian, Arab, Indigenous (e.g. Aboriginal, First Nation, Native American).

_Themes in Animation Studies: _Defining Animation, Medium Specificity, 
Anthropomorphism, Cartoon Violence, Animation Labour, Animation and 
Education, Environmentalism.

_Aesthetics: _Performance, Colour, Space/ depth, Sound, Realism, Visual 
Modernism, Fluid Frame, Computer Generated Animation

_Anime_: Visual style and connections to traditional art, Japanese 
cultural history and anime, The post-human body, Genre, Shōjo, Hayao 
Miyazaki,Satoshi Kon.

_National Animation: _Russian, Czech/ Eastern Europe, African Nation, 
Irish, French, Latin American, Australasian

_Studios_; The Disney Princess, Disney Villains, Disney Controversies, 
US Golden Age Studios, NFB, Pixar and the Post-Digital Studios

*Format and Timeline*

Chapters should be between 4000 and 5000 words.

To complete the manuscript alongside our teaching duties, we 
provisionally propose the following schedule:

·*25^th August proposal deadline*– 250 word outline of your chosen chapter

·September 2023: selection process

·April 2024: contributors submit first drafts of chapters

·September 2024: editors return annotated drafts to authors for revision

·December 2024: contributors submit second drafts

·January 2025: editors submit completed manuscript
