*Idealism and Contemporary Film Theory: Subjectivity, Politics, Technics*
This issue of /Transformations/ seeks to explore idealism as a positive
influence on and ongoing relevance to contemporary developments in film
theory and analysis (broadly understood). With a particular interest in
the extent to which Idealist philosophy continues to inform contemporary
theories of lived experience, cognition, imagination, morality and
politics, the issue will explore the way this seminal philosophical
movement has helped shape our understanding of spectatorial
subjectivity, cinema as revolutionary tool, and film as a technology or
‘technique’. The issue will suggest that despite the attempts of film
theorists to denounce, suppress or /negate /the formative role of
idealism in twentieth century thought, many of its key insights into the
relationship between human subjectivity, mediation and the non-human
world remain relevant to our present moment and the place of screen
media in it.
The editors invite contributions from researchers and scholars on
relevant topics including, but not limited to:
* Idealism and theories of embodied spectatorship (Sobchack, Marks,
Barker, Bruno etc.)
* Cinema, subjectivity, and the question of technics [technē]
(Stiegler, Nancy, Derrida etc.)
* Idealism and the new realisms and object-oriented approaches to
cinema (Meillassoux, Shaviro, Harman)
* The role of idealism in dialectical film theories (McGowan,
Rancière, Žižek)
* Idealism, schemata, cognitivist, and quantum approaches to the
moving image
* /Naturphilosophie/and ecocritical film theory
* Idealism, the philosophy of language and psychoanalytic film theory
* Idealism, freedom, and the politics of the cinematic imagination
* Moral philosophy and film theory’s ‘ethical turn’
