[Commlist] CFP: Revising Alice

Wed Mar 08 16:47:38 GMT 2023

*/REVISING ALICE /*

Since their publication in 1865 and 1871 respectively, Lewis Carroll’s /Alice/ novels have inspired a wealth of academic and artistic interpretations and re-interpretations. Refreshingly free of the didactic tone that had dominated much of the literature ostensibly aimed at children, the /Alice /books simultaneously offered an experience of delight and anarchy to successive generations of readers. In this edited monograph, we aim to present contemporary and fresh takes on Alice and her adventures, with an emphasis on intertextual reference and multimodal presentation. We as co-editors of this project come from literary and aesthetic disciplines and, as such, we are open to hybrid approaches to the material. Possible topics can include, but are certainly not limited to:

*//*

**

  * Reinterpretations: Re-reading /Alice/ through a contemporary lens.
  * Adaptation and Multimodality: Films, Theatre, Television, Games,
    Advertising, Comics and Graphic Novels.
  * Daughters of Alice and New Wonderlands: Alice’s legacy.
  * Queering/Transing Alice
  * Alice as Trope or Archetype: Origins, Genre, Alice on the
    psychoanalytic couch.
  * Curation: Exhibiting Alice, Alice as a Cabinet of Curiosities.

The editors themselves intend to focus on Jonathan Miller’s adaptation of /Alice /(1966) from a Lacanian perspective, and /Alice’/s influence on modern Fantasy texts aimed at a YA audience, so we recommend that potential authors bear this in mind.

We welcome proposals of 500 words with short bios of the author all sent in one document. The deadline for submission is *April 17^th , 2023*.  We have interest already from an academic publisher for this project with a view to publishing in early 2025. Please send proposals to *(revisingalice /at/ gmail.com) <mailto:(revisingalice /at/ gmail.com)>*
