[Commlist] CFP - Sounds of the End of the World

Tue Oct 11 12:57:20 GMT 2022

III International Conference on Sonorities Research (CIPS) –

Sounds of the End of the World

June 7th to 9th, 2023

Fluminense Federal University (UFF) – Niterói/RJ – Brazil

In recent decades, we have witnessed changes on a global scale that can be seen as threats to human existence itself – threats caused by ourselves, as the Anthropocene theories demonstrate. Climate change, pandemics, food shortages and wars are the result of the brutal exploitation of the planet, the struggle for control of natural and economic resources, as well as the denial of the ongoing crisis.

The end of the world means, of course, not only a nuclear or climatic hecatomb, but also the end of worldviews, models of knowledge or even cognitive, affective and social patterns. A new world emerges outlining its creative powers and its dystopias of control, automation and depletion of natural resources necessary for technological development.

How do sound and musical cultures take a position, articulate, face and/or politicize themselves in the face of late capitalism and the Anthropocene? What do certain sounds and music teach us in these situations where there seems to be no alternative but to accelerate? Or even: what sounds need to be heard, which are ignored and which denounce the urgency before the end of the world? Anyway, what does it mean to hear the end of the world? In this sense, the III International Conference on Sonorities Research (CIPS) - Sounds of the End of the Worldseeks to highlight the sound aspects of our relationship with the world and with the transformations it has been going through.

The III CIPSwelcomes proposals for scientific presentations and artistic performances. Some of the perspectives, but not the only ones, that interest this conference are:

  *

    Sound ecologies: Anthropocene, creation and entropy;

  *

    Sound identities: Post-coloniality; Decoloniality; Afro-futurisms;
    Amerindian Perspectivism;

  *

    Technologies and production models: the sound project of late
    capitalism;

  *

    Collective fear, emotions, media and music;

  *

    Listening modes, signs and sound affections in times of capitalist
    realism;

  *

    Struggles, Resistances, Insurgencies: Sound, Listening and Survival
    in a World at Risk.
