In 2020 we commemorate the 25th anniversary of The Beijing Declaration 
and Platform for Action. Several developments in the promotion of 
equality and peace for women in the world are attributed to this 
document approved in 1995 at the IV World Conference on Women which 
remains a reference for the international community. The outcomes of the 
Platform and its documents and their subsequent reviews are a legacy 
embodied in a set of strategic goals, which have been followed by the 
necessary actions to achieve them in twelve priority areas. One of these 
areas is “Women and the media” (Area J), which will be the core theme of 
the Gender and Media International Conference: Challenges of Beijing +

This event results from a joint initiative of the Working Group on 
Gender and Sexualities of the Portuguese Association of Communication 
Sciences <https://apem-estudos.org/pt/> (SOPCOM) and the Research and 
Policy Committee of GAMAG – Global Alliance on Media and Gender 
<https://gamag.net/>, in partnership with the Portuguese Association of  
Women Studies <https://apem-estudos.org/pt/> (APEM), and the Faculty of 
Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra
