 From a methodological perspective, audiovisual communication research 
is currently in a key moment of deep revisioning. On one hand, since the 
mid ‘90s, and even before, approaches that applied theoretical 
frameworks based on traditional paradigms have been questioned, even if 
quantitative methods were used.

In this sense, a turning point was the publication of /Post-Theory. 
Reconstructing Film Studies/, in 1996. One of its editors, David 
Bordwell, concluded his introductory article pointing out that “decades 
of sedimented dogma need to be broken down and swept away and the spirit 
of critical thinking renewed”, meaning to stay away from paradigms and 
theoretical frameworks such as semiotics, psychoanalysis, feminism, 
postmodernism or postcolonialism among others, because they embed a 
“dogmatic” bias on the side of the researcher.

Twenty-five years after, the technological development of analytical 
tools allow researchers to analyze audiovisual texts accurately and 
fast. This has launched quantitative studies in this field, such as 
cinemetric researches, or studies based on neurophysiological techniques.

Thus, researchers have now access to a huge amount of data, that may be 
used in qualitative analysis. But the main questions seem to go back to 
their previous state, though now with more information to argue about 
them and with a higher reliability.

Articles accepted for the special issue will focus on research on 
methodologies, and how these have evolved or affect the results, as well 
as their limitations. Submissions from authors in various 
countries/continents are encouraged.

Articles may cover topics such as:

·Methodologies applied to audiovisual communication research

·Research techniques applied to audiovisual communication research

·Key points and limitations in qualitative and qualitative perspectives

·Influence of the studied materials studied on methodology

*Research Questions*

·When a same audiovisual discourse has been studied with different 
methodologies, what differences has been found?

·What consequences has audiovisual communication research on the 
production of audiovisual discourses?

·What are the most common biases and mistakes in different 
methodological approaches?

·To what extent do recent types of audiovisual materials require new 
research techniques?

No payment from authors will be expected in this issue.

Minho (Portugal), PhD in Communication from NOVA University Lisbon 
(Portugal). He is authored of several books and academic articles in 
international and national journals with peer review.

Professor at University Complutense of Madrid (Spain), in the department 
of Applied Communication Sciences. His research work in audiovisual 
communication covers both qualitative and quantitative perspectives.
