*Digital Diasporas: Interdisciplinary Perspectives: 6/7 June 2019*
Funded as part of the translingual strand of the AHRC Open World
Research Initiative ‘Cross-Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community’
project, and led by the Institute of Modern Languages Research and
Digital Humanities at the School of Advanced Study, University of London.
This conference aims to inspire greater dialogue across disciplinary
boundaries in order to develop a richer understanding of the role of the
digital in creating and sustaining diasporic connections and
communities, and of how diasporic groups and individuals transform and
shape digital tools and technologies for their own creative and
strategic purposes.
The programme includes a public lecture by Roopika Risam (Salem State
University) 'Mobilizing New Digital Worlds: The Stakes of Postcolonial
Digital Humanities’, in collaboration with Digital Humanities and OWRI
Language Acts & Worldmaking at King’s College London.
Keynotes: Mirca Madianou (Goldsmiths) 'Technocolonialism: Digital
humanitarianism as extraction' & Jannis Androutsopoulos (Universität
Hamburg/Multiling, University of Oslo) 'Mediational repertoires and
diasporic connectivity: from Senegal to Oslo and back again'.
Plenary Panels: ‘Digital Media and the Diasporic Self’, ‘Polish
Communities in the UK: Diasporic Spaces and Media in the Past and
Present’ & ‘Mapping Migrations’
