*Music, Cities and Popular Memory: A very messy cultural archive?*
A research symposium exploring intersections between: archives,
heritage, memory, histories; “Music City” strategies; everyday cultural
economy; amateur and professional expertise.

/Overview/
The relationship between popular music, cultural memory and the city is
currently experiencing renewed attention, both in research and in
practice. Heritage and archives have emerged as central to the function
of music in sustaining place-based identities and attachments. A range
of actors - allied to the academy, industry, local and national
governments, third-sector bodies, museums and cultural consultancies -
are invested in understanding, evaluating and supporting the cultural
and economic activities that bind music and sound to place. Hence,
archival activities often align with governance policies and objectives
(associated with “Cities of Culture”, “Creative Cities” or,
increasingly, “Music Cities”), or the auditing imperatives of state
funding for the arts. Very often, however, they take place under their
own steam in personal and community projects, away from
officially-sanctioned narratives. Both demand scholarly attention.
In line with this, there is a further need to develop understanding of
“ordinary” (rather than “global” or “exceptional”) cities, as well as
“everyday” aspects of the creative economy. And, unlike some of the
canonical sites of British music (London, Liverpool, Manchester,
Glasgow...), Southampton is not overburdened with a popular heritage, or
constrained by the mythology of international celebrity - Craig David
notwithstanding. Although this relative absence can sometimes appear as
a source of frustration to local practitioners and acolytes, it is also
fertile ground, inviting residents to narrate their own cultural
histories, to perform their own acts of custodianship and curation - a
core motivation for this event.
