Throughout history and across the globe, elites and political
opportunists have promoted social divisions and appealed to group-based
identities to set their agendas and reinforce power. The idea of
provoking anxiety, resentment, or fear of the “other” is not a new
strategy. However, appeals to nativism, racism, xenophobia,
anti-immigrant bias, hate speech and homophobia have become more evident
in an age of increased globalization. The world has changed in multiple
ways in the past decades, of which the speed, scope and context of
mobility and cultural fluidity, are some of the most salient. So that we
witness the intensification of new forms of mobility, migratory flows
and blurring national boundaries in relation to politics of inclusion
and exclusion.
‘Othering’ is a term that not only encompasses many expressions of
prejudice on the basis of group identities, but it also provides a set
of common conditions that propagate group-based inequality and
marginality. Othering refers to the process of representing individuals
or social groups to render them as distant, alien, monster or deviant.
Discourses and practices of ‘othering’ rest on distinctions between us
and them. It is ‘them’ (the opposition, refugees, foreigners,
minorities, etc.) who pose the biggest threat against ‘our’ homogenous
and flawless community. The categories of ‘othering’ and meanings
associated with those categories are socially constructed.
As discourse strategies, there are several ways of ‘othering’, such as,
homogenization, discrimination, mediatization, suppression and
silencing. Dimensions of othering include, but are not limited to,
religion, ideology, sex, race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. These
dimensions often intersect with each other to multiply effect and deepen
social hierarchies. Although the axes of othering vary considerably,
they involve a similar set of underlying dynamics.
The 8^th International Conference on Conflict, Terrorism and Society
undertakes the theme of ‘othering’ as a broad set of practices and
discourses. The Conference aims to include as many perspectives as
possible while providing a focused environment for discussions on how
otherization is built across media genres and policy making through
cultural and political articulations. We will investigate how (and to
what end) ‘others’ are manufactured and how they are anchored in our
collective memory. Through the analysis of various media, such as film,
news media and socialmedia, we aim to shed light on the institutional,
political, social, and economical forces that form and transform the
discourses and practices of othering.Within this perspective, the
conference aims to bring together scholars from across disciplines to
discuss issues related to ‘othering’.Potential topics for presentations
include but are not limited to:
·Manufacturing ‘others’ across media genres
·The specific roles ofnews media, film, digital media, and political
discourses in processes of othering
·Media frames and narratives of ‘others’
