17th Biennial Wake Forest University Argumentation Conference

"Experiencing Argument"

The Biennial Wake Forest Argumentation Conference began in November 
1982, with a one-day conference on the Wake Forest University campus.  
After again meeting on the Wake Forest campus in 1986, the Conference 
was convened in 1988 in the Wake Forest study abroad facility, Casa 
Artom, in Venice, Italy, with co-sponsorship from the International 
Society for the Study of Argumentation (ISSA).  The conference has 
subsequently alternated between “the Venice Conference” and domestic sites.

The 17th Biennial Wake Forest University Argumentation Conference will 
feature keynote addresses by Gordon Mitchell, Sara Rubinelli, and 
Takeshi Suziki as well as special argumentation workshops for 
undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty.

We invite papers, paper abstracts, panel and seminar submissions:

We welcome papers and proposals that consider argumentation from a 
variety of perspectives, including rhetorical, philosophical, and 
logical approaches to argumentation. We invite paper abstracts, papers, 
proposals for panels and other creative contributions addressing all 
aspects related to argumentation, including but not limited to:

-Argumentation theory and practice

-Argumentation and inspiration/motivation

-Argumentation and identity

-Argumentation and inclusivity

-Argumentation and citizenship/democracy

-International views and approaches to argumentation

-Argumentation in the media (traditional and new media)

-Argumentation and science

-Argumentation ethics

-Legal argumentation

-Argumentation and health

-Argumentation and sport

Papers must not exceed 25 pages and must include a separate cover page 
with the author’s/s’ affiliation, title (faculty, graduate student, 
undergraduate, et cetera) and complete contact information. No 
information identifying the author/s should appear on the paper.

Paper Abstracts can be no longer than 500 words and must include title, 
author affiliation, and contact information.

Panel proposals must include a 250-word rationale, a 250-word abstract 
of each proposed paper, and a list of presenters, affiliation, title, 
and contact information.

Workshop for Undergraduate Students: We invite paper submissions for an 
undergraduate research workshop. This workshop will bring together 
undergraduate students and faculty mentors to promote undergraduate 
research efforts. We encourage Communication majors and minors and 
Lambda Pi Eta members and their mentors to apply for the workshop. Paper 
submissions should identify institutional support that enables both 
student and mentor to attend the workshop. Selected students will have 
the opportunity to present their papers and work with argumentation 
research experts as well as their mentors to develop a sustained line of 
undergraduate research. Paper submissions must not exceed 25 pages and 
must include a separate cover page with the author’s/s’ affiliation, 
title and complete contact information. No information identifying the 
author/s should appear on the paper.

We also welcome ideas for workshops and seminars from scholars willing 
to lead a session of about 3 hours. We will notify the workshop/seminar 
leaders and then issue an additional call for participants for the 
accepted workshops/seminars. Workshop/seminar leaders are also 
encouraged to invite participants.

Workshops proposals must include a title, a 250-word abstract, a 
250-word rationale, a list of suggested readings, and the name/s of the 
leading scholar/s, their affiliation, title, and contact information.  
Workshop/seminar leaders will be notified by January 31.

Seminars/workshops will not be scheduled opposite any paper sessions, so 
presenters may, and are encouraged to, also participate in/propose 
seminars or workshops.

We encourage submissions from faculty, graduate students, and 
undergraduate students. We will host a special session highlighting 
undergraduate research and encourage faculty to propose co-authored 
papers or collaborative research.
