*Call for Proposals *
“Communication, Disinformation and the Media”
Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies Conference 2018
Stanford University, USA, June 1-3, 2018
The Communication, Disinformation, and the Media division of the 2018
AABS conference seeks individual, panel and roundtable submissions
featuring original research on /all /areas of journalism, mass media,
and related subjects in the Baltic states. We are particularly
interested in the following.
Work that can contribute to the investigation of similarity and
difference in the development of media across the Baltic states and
communities therein;
Contemporary issues of wide concern such as “fake news,” “information
war,” and media policies;
The role of media in securing the independence and reestablishment of
independence of the Baltic states;
Media as part of the establishment, maintenance, and contestation of
identity and community in the Baltic states, especially with reference
to media content;
Issues of democracy and journalism practice.
Historical perspectives of press freedom in the Baltics.
Unlike discipline-specific events, the AABS conference provides a
special forum wherein presenters face an audience knowledgeable both in
their field and the region, enabling strong opportunities for feedback,
discussion, and collaboration. The conference coincides with two
significant anniversaries—100 years since the Baltic states declared
independence and 50 years since the establishment of AABS—and is located
at one of the top US universities. Join us for this special occasion and
show how communication scholars can respond to key issues and questions
that enable a greater understanding of the Baltic states.
The deadline for submissions is October 15, 2017.
Paper proposals can be submitted via the conference website:
