Session organizer: Flavia Laviosa (Wellesley College, /Editor of the

*Abstract of the session*
Within the realm of a trans-cultural debate, Italy can be viewed as a
unifying geo-cultural locus for a contemporary discussion on
/translocal/ cinema, thus fostering new theoretical frameworks and
critical methodologies to elaborate a multifaceted definition of Italian
cinema, transcending geo-ethnic frontiers, land and sea borders, and
moving away from merely celebratory localized (pen)insular cinematic
experiences. Epochal transformations since the twentieth century have
reassessed Italy’s /translocality/ and its cinema has become
quintessentially global, artistically perceptive and alert, receptive
and responsive to international influences. Furthermore, Italian cinema
in a transnational context is multiple and rhizomatic. It is both
European and Mediterranean, and moves in many other less-explored
directions towards Africa, Asia, North and South America. Within such
transnational framework, scholarship engages in a methodological tension
between studying Italian ‘national’ cinema and transnational critical
approaches to Italian cinema, thus recovering these overlooked
connections and re-composing them in an historic and aesthetic map,
marked by cross-national dialogues and trans-generational exchanges.
This direction is inevitably necessary to articulate a debate tackling
the ties of Italian cinema with the rest of the world. Such ‘tension’
is, in fact, a spring-board for a more stimulating intellectual
discourse that establishes a new theoretical canon and re-defines the
field of Italian film studies. In this session presenters identify
innovations and tensions shaping contemporary Italian cinema productions
and establishing new encounters with world cinema.
