*The 5^th Conference on Korean Screen Culture*

King’s College London, UK

*June 3^rd -4^th 2016*

Following successful conferences on Korean Screen Culture held at SOAS,
the University of London (2012 & 2013), Sheffield Hallam University
(2014), and the University of Copenhagen (2015), the Department of Film
Studies at King’s College London is pleased to announce the 5^th Korean
Screen Culture Conference to be hosted by the Department of Film Studies
in collaboration with the Korea Foundation and the Korean Cultural
Center, UK.

The conference aims to critically engage with some of the important and
urgent issues that have affected and guided contemporary Korean screen
culture; in particular cinema, television, web comics, and music.  We
welcome proposals for papers and panels on all aspects of Korean screen
culture, South and North Korean cinema past and present, video games,
production, distribution & reception of film, television, K-pop music
videos, also the transnational and intermedial aesthetics of Korean
screen culture such as the impacts of the Korean Wave (Hallyu),
transnational and intermedial adaptations, co-productions,
collaborations, and various intermedia practices.

Topics could include but are not limited to the following:

-Contemporary Korean costume cinema and/or drama series

-Colonial history in the popular imagination

-Documentary and/or poetic impulse in contemporary Korean screen culture

-Re-conglomeration of the Korean film industry since 2007

-Pop idols and/or stardom

-Girlhood

-the /Reply/ (1997, 1994, 1988) television series and cultural nostalgia

-Web comics, fandom, and intermedial aesthetics

-the New Korean Wave (Hallyu 2.0)

-Korean cinema and urban space

-Multiculturalism (including migration and immigration) in contemporary
Korean screen culture

-Food programs

-Artists’ films

*Papers on other forms of Korean screen culture will also be considered.*

In your proposals (for individual papers as well as panel proposals)
please include your name, institutional affiliation, the title of the
paper, an abstract of 300 words, and a 50-100 word biography of the
author.  Please send your proposal as a doc file, NO PDFs, please.
Please send proposals by Friday, the 25^th of February 2016 to Dr Jinhee

Allapplicants will receive email confirmation of the receipt of their
abstract *_within_* 10 days of submission. Successful applicants will be
notified by mid-March and will be required to send the complete paper of
5,500 - 6,000 words by April 30th, 2016.

Selected papers presented at the conference will be given an opportunity
to be published in /The Journal of Japanese and Korean Cinema/.
