CALL FOR PAPERS

Media Democratization: Media Systems Twenty Five Years after the Revolutions of 1989

A special issue of Medijske studije/ Media Studies to be published in June 2015.

Edited by Monika Metykova (University of Sussex, UK) and Lenka Waschková Císarová (Masaryk University, Czech Republic).

Following the fall of communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe in the late 1980s much scholarly attention has focused on exploring the so-called transition to democracy and particularly the role of media in it. The establishment of democratic governments and the free market were considered key aspects of the transition. However, scholarly interest in media democratization in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc largely disappeared by the mid-2000s when some of these countries joined the NATO and the European Union. The literature becomes scarcer and also more specialized, with little attention paid to the complexity of issues within the frameworks of individual nation states while at the same time on the ground in these countries we find instances that question the extent to which media fulfil their democratic roles. The special issue will be focused on various aspects of media democratization in transitive media systems.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

• media and democracy

• media independence, particularly from political and economic influences

• public service media

• media ownership

• media legislation

• plurality of contents in the media

• journalism culture

• journalists’ professionalization

• developments in online journalism

• local journalism and civic engagement
