Mon Jan 28 17:12:56 GMT 2013
FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES
Commentary & Criticism Call for Papers
We invite contributions for the Commentary and Criticism section of
Feminist Media Studies.
Potential contributors can write to co-editors, Kaitlynn Mendes
((kmendes /at/ dmu.ac.uk)) and Kumarini Silva ((kumi /at/ email.unc.edu)) to express
preliminary interest. Final essays of between 1,500-2,000 words are due
by Monday, 22nd April 2013.
Gender, Disability, Disfigurement and Media
While there is a large amount of research done on minority issues, one
that is largely understudied is representation of
disability/disfigurement. While last year’s Paralympic Games in London
provided a rare opportunity for people with disabilities/disfigurement
to be the focus of media attention, we felt it was an opportune moment
to place a call for papers on the topic of gender,
disability/disfigurement and media.
We therefore welcome papers which focus on, but are not limited to:
- Representations of men/women with disfigurements/disability
- Frequency of disability/disfigurement in the media
- Use of disabled/disfigured individuals to produce media
- Audience reception of disability/disfigurement
- Use of social media to provide a space for discussion and
shared experiences of disfigurement/disability
Please be sure to follow the Feminist Media Studies style guide, which
can be found at the following link:
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/journal.asp?issn=1468-0777&linktype=44
and authors are reminded to email their submission directly to Kaitlynn
Mendes or Kumarini Silva.
