'The Mediation of Security: an international conference'

The Conference ?The Mediation of Security: an international conference? will be held at De Montfort University (Leicester) on Wednesday, 18 May 2011.

This international, one-day conference will examine the various ways in which security is described in the media, with particular reference to the stories promoted by news organisations when they attempt to support or undermine the various propositions made to the public about security and the ?terror threat?.

The conference will bring together a range of academic researchers from different disciplines. Although we are particularly interested in the mediation of terrorism and public security, contributions on this topic from other perspectives are also welcome and encouraged. These may include, but are not limited to, the following fields: media and communication, law, international relations, politics, human rights, psychology, cultural studies, sociology, philosophy, and information science.

Suggested topics for papers include (but are not limited to):

- Media representations of security
- Case studies of mediated events (national and international)
- The politics of terrorism ? global and national perspectives
- The politics of security ? global and national perspectives
- The ?cyber attack?
- Terrorism and new media
- Social media and terrorism
- Surveillance and subversion of democracy
- Legal aspects of public security
- Human rights and security
- Governance and security
- Legislative responses to terrorism and war
- Ethical issues
- Theories of terrorism
- Media strategies of insurgent groups

CONFIRMED KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:

PROPOSALS

Potential contributors are invited to submit a 250-word abstract and a title. Proposals should also include the contributor?s title, name, institutional affiliation, email address, and a brief biographical note. Contributions by postgraduate students will also be considered.

We also welcome panel proposals of 3 to 4 papers. Please submit a 200-word description of the panel, the abstracts for all papers (250 words each, as well as the contributors? titles, names, institutional affiliations, email addresses, and brief biographical notes), and the name of the person chairing the panel.

Two copies of all individual abstracts and panel proposals should be submitted by Friday, 4 February 2011: one to the Conference Coordinator Ruth Sanz Sabido (rsanzs /at/ dmu.ac.uk), AND another one to the Media Discourse Group mailbox (media.discourse /at/ dmu.ac.uk).

All proposals will go through a peer-review process. Successful contributors will be notified by email on Tuesday, 22 February 2011.
