>Political Mobilization: Understanding Determinants and Constraints

>In the post 9/11 situation, the action of Political Islamic
>movements appears to fall into two broad categories. In some
>countries they engage in political violence; in others they
>generally refrain from doing so. Turkey makes a good example of
>this second category for there, unlike what is increasingly
>happening in some neighbouring Muslim countries, Islamic movements
>have, so far, substantially refrained to move to political
>violence. More precisely, the case of Turkey raises stimulating
>questions that have broader significance.
>
>Participants in this Session are asked to draw on
>ethnographic evidence to examine the various, sometimes overlapping
>processes, determinants and constraints that may explain the
>emergence of religious fundamentalist violence. The focus will be
>on the impact of Islamic mobilization on political violence,
>particularly but not exclusively in the Middle East, and on the
>reasons why individuals do, or do not, engage in accepted and
>legitimate political movements.
>
>By bringing together anthropologists who specialise in
>various ethnographic settings, this Session aims to develop a
>comparative view of the processes that mark the rise of
>extra-parliamentary fundamentalist violence in some Muslim
>countries and, possibly, how to respond to such processes. We need
>to understand the motivations and purposes, both personal and
>political, behind political violence, and why it has become so
>virulent. Equally importantly, we need to understand the causes of,
>and limitations on, the development of political violence, as well
>as their acceptability within and without actors own communities.
>It is imperative that our analysis takes fully into account the
>role of socio-cultural influences in explaining political
>strategies, responses and behaviours. In the light
>of empirically-based accounts of normative accepted rules, of
>political deterrence and of the accommodating democratic structure
>of secular states, it is the ambition of this Session to develop a
>better understanding of this phenomenon, addressing the close
>relationship between religion and political and socio-cultural structure.
>
>Paper proposals, including title and a short abstract (250
>words), should be sent to Dr Marcello
>Mollica
>(<mailto:(marcello.mollica /at/ unifr.ch)>(marcello.mollica /at/ unifr.ch)<mailto:(marcello.mollica /at/ unifr.ch)>)
>and Prof. Kayhan Delibas
>(<mailto:(kdelibas /at/ adu.edu.tr)>(kdelibas /at/ adu.edu.tr)<mailto:(kdelibas /at/ adu.edu.tr)>)
>by 15th June 2010.
