Mon Feb 09 14:04:28 GMT 2004

ECA Conference: Shaping The Future of Communication Research in Europe
 >
 >
 >
 >Istanbul, April 17 20, 2004
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >The conference will be devoted to discussions of the current status and
 >future of communication and media research in Europe. What is the
 >situation in various strands of the field in the various countries of
 >Europe? What should we strive for? What possibilities and challenges are
 >there for the communication and media research community in business,
 >government, AND the European Union? How should research goals be defined
 >and pursued? How can the ECA aid their future accomplishment?
 >
 >
 >
 >The ECA has designed this conference so that European researchers from
 >many countries and strands of research will be represented. We want to
 >contribute to the establishment of a strong and active European network of
 >communication researchers a network that makes a difference. During the
 >conference the participants are invited to develop networking plans that
 >can contribute to the advancement of communication and media research in
 >Europe. We invite cooperation on three general themes. If there is
 >sufficient interest, further themes can be set up.
 >
 >
 >
 >· Communication Ethics. To what extent do European national
 >cultures vary in their views on ethics and its application in society?
 >Where are the ethical dilemmas particularly striking?
 >
 >
 >
 >· Organizational and Strategic Communication. What is the impact
 >of strategic communication (public relations) on the information
 >society?
 >What is the role of communication in organizations undergoing fundamental
 >changes? What is the role of technologically-mediated communication in
 >organizations?
 >
 >
 >
 >· Technology and Media Use. How are technologies such as the
 >Internet and mobile communication influencing European cultures? What
 >happens to media use and the users identity and cultural knowledge? What
 >can the history of technology tell us about future developments in media use?
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >Three Days of Networking
 >
 >
 >
 >Each day of the conference is dedicated to a fundamental aspect of
 >research: On Sunday the keywords are research politics and government, on
 >Monday they are theories and methodologies, and on Tuesday it is
 >international cooperation. These are subjects that researchers need mutual
 >understanding of in order to purposefully shape the future of European
 >communication and media research.
 >
 >
 >
 >The Istanbul conference will be a lively and sociable event. All
 >attendants will be booked at the five star Divan Hotel, so that we live
 >close together during the event. Social events are an integrated part of
 >the ECA conference. The local arrangement committee will make sure that we
 >all get the opportunity to experience Istanbul, which is an attraction in
 >its own right.
 >
 >
 >
 >The ECA is a democratic and inclusive organization. The documents and
 >discussions produced in Istanbul will guide the Executive Council in its
 >decisions about the future of the ECA as a force propelling research. The
 >initiatives taken at the Istanbul event will continue after the conference
 >in discussions on the ECA Web site, and the deliberations will be taken up
 >again at the ECA Congress in 2005.
 >
 >
 >
 >We are in need of volunteers to take up positions in the organization
 >as
 >group representatives and members of standing committees, and would like
 >to arrange this during the conference. In order to create an efficient
 >organization we have limited the number of participants to a maximum of 50
 >that should reflect the differences that exists within the great continent
 >(and islands). Young scholars in particular are encouraged to take up
 >positions.

 >The ECA Research Groups
 >
 >
 >
 >The research groups are crucial to accomplishing real research
 >collaboration within the ECA. On Monday and Tuesday there will be two
 >sessions each day, where participants present their particular research
 >interest. What follows is a detailed account of the (preliminary) identity
 >of the three different research groups.
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >Group 1: Communication Ethics.
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >
 >Interim leader: Ayseli Usluata.
 >
 >
 >
 >The group aims to promote research and teaching related to
 >communication
 >and media ethics in Europe and to develop a network among colleagues who
 >are interested in this subject.
 >
 >
 >
 >In order to make ethical decisions, as individual human beings and as
 >citizens of democratic societies, people need to get ethical information
 >which involves revealing truths. The sessions will try to provide
 >explanations and understanding of questions such as: Are the citizens of
 >Europe getting the real reality/ ethical information from political
 >leaders and the media? Are the credibility and reliability of
 >organizations, politicians, and the media in Europe being questioned? Are
 >business ethics and social responsibility incompatible with corporate life
 >in Europe?
 >
 >
 >
 >Research papers, case studies, roundtable proposals on any topic
 >relevant
 >to communication ethics are welcome, including organizational, health or
 >international communication, public relations, advertising and the media.
 >
 >
 >
 >Group 2: Organizational and Strategic Communication.
 >
 >
 >
 >Interim leader: Betteke van Ruler.
 >
 >
 >
 >The group aims to promote research and teaching related to
 >organizational
 >and strategic communication in Europe and to develop a network among
 >colleagues who are interested in this subject.
 >
 >
 >
 >Modern societies are often considered as information, knowledge or
 >network societies. These metaphors show that modern societies are
 >utterly dependent on their social communications systems. These
 >communication systems are shaped by the interaction of public and private
 >actors on different levels. They are influenced by the strategies of the
 >mass media, by the internal and external communication of organizations,
 >and by the practices and standards of professional information and
 >communication workers. In the sessions of this group we will discuss
 >changes in this field of organizational and strategic communication,
 >related to an open and informed society.
 >
 >
 >
 >Research papers, case studies, roundtable proposals and proposals for
 >cooperation are welcome.
 >
 >
 >
 >Group 3: Technology and Media Use.
 >
 >
 >
 >Interim leader: Lars Nyre.
 >
 >
 >
 >During the early years of the 21st century digital media and mobile
 >communication have become very important in European media and
 >communication cultures. The group will focus on present and future
 >developments in this realm. We invite a broad spectrum of technology
 >related approaches, for example political theory, ICT design, editorial
 >policies, audience research, philosophy, media psychology, economics,
 >textual/cultural analysis, esthetics, and research on human/media
 >interaction in general.
 >
 >
 >
 >At the Istanbul Conference the Internet will be our main focus.
 >Predicting
 >the future presupposes analyses of national cultures, language-areas and
 >regions, and the way the Internet is used for various purposes. The group
 >will organize itself at the Istanbul Conference by electing a leader and
 >select the focus for the 2005 ECA Congress. The long-term goal is to
 >develop a European network of researchers who can commit themselves to
 >focused research within the group.
