For the past fifteen years the University for Humanistics has aimed to 
renew the long tradition of humanist thought against the background of the 
new challenges of our times. Growing tensions within global society demand 
new forms of critical thinking, both within academia and in the public 
debate. The manifold problems facing us locally and globally are dominating 
the agenda of politicians and the media. Much less attention is given to 
the many inspiring ideas and practical experiments offering new hope for 
the future.

Against this background the University will mark its fifteenth anniversary 
with an international conference on Critical Theory Today: Perspectives and 
Practices. The conference will address the University=s double focus on 
humanisation and meanings of life in relation to the perspective developed 
by the internationally renowned critical thinker Îeyla Benhabib.

The central question to be addressed at the conference will be how to forge 
connections between on one hand the many inspiring ideas and experiments at 
the level of personal relations but also within institutions and 
organizations, and on the other hand intellectual discourse and public 
debate. In the plenary morning session, after an introduction by 
Vice-Chancellor Harry Kunneman, Îeyla Benhabib (Yale University) and Bryan 
Turner (University of Cambridge) will address the central theme of the 
conference. In the afternoon this theme will be analysed further in two 
parallel sessions with addresses by Rosi Braidotti and Nasr Abû Zayd.

Following the conference honorary degrees will be bestowed upon Professor 
Îeyla Benhabib and Professor Otto Duintjer in an official academic ceremony 
in the Janskerk in the centre of Utrecht.

www.uvh.nl. The conference fee is EUR 60 (EUR 30 for students). Early 
registration is recommended as the number of  places available is limited.
