III INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATION AND REALITY
DIGITAL UTOPIA IN THE MEDIA: FROM DISCOURSES TO FACTS. A BALANCE
BARCELONA, 20-21 MAY, 2005

DESCRIPTION
School of Communication, University Ramon Llull (Barcelona-Catalunya-Spain), will organise its third International Conference on Communication and Reality. The theme for reflection and discussion is: Digital Utopia in the media: from discourses to facts. A balance

In the last decade we have been able to be observers and also participants in the changes that have been caused in our society through the introduction of the new technologies of information and communication (ICT).

A huge amount of literature has grown around the information society which has quite often tended towards hyperbole, and which has sometimes distorted the whole process. In this sense, it is interesting to note the role played by the media: in the early nineties, many expectations were generated and great promises were made around the expansion of the ICT. Almost fifteen years later, events have sometimes confirmed this, but many others have toned down or even annulled the initial expectations.

In the specific field of the media, the end of newspapers was announced, and even the disappearance of journalists or, in the best of cases, that their role would be redefined; traditional communicative models were questioned, the combination of the television and the computer was announced and we were blinded with the possibilities of television by internet. In the field of advertising, we were reached by the miracle of the banners, one-to-one advertising and the effectiveness of the new advertising.

What remains of what was planned little more than a decade ago? What things have been a simple ephemeral mirage and what have become a reality that can be considered in the long term? Evaluated with perspective, what have the true actors of this process been?

We believe that these and many other questions should meet with a rigorous answer in the form of a critical balance in the 3rd International Conference on Communication and Reality.
