[Commlist] CFP - The Handbook of Global Comics
Tue Mar 31 22:27:00 GMT 2026
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Routledge Handbook of Global Comics
Edited by Harriet Earle (SHU) and Amy Matthewson (Birmingham)
This volume will bring together concise, scholarly introductions to
comics around the world. We are hoping to be able to offer chapters on
as many different countries’ comics industries and traditions,
histories, and socio-cultural influences as possible in order for this
volume to work as a corrective to the largely US- and Euro-centric
guides to comics currently available. Each section will be arranged
geographically and will offer fresh, accessible introductions to comics
from every corner of the globe.
We are seeking chapters delineated by country. Depending on the country,
we'd like to divide them by time period, language, or genre. For
example, within Aotearoa New Zealand, we would be open to chapters on
both Māori and Anglophone histories.
We are especially interested in chapters on countries in Africa, Asia,
and SWANA, as these areas currently have limited representation within
Comics Studies.
Routledge Handbooks are comprehensive, must-have surveys of a core
sub-discipline aimed at the library market. The main goal of each
handbook is to survey a topic, explaining why the issue or area is
important, and critically discussing the leading views in the area. The
market is truly global, and Routledge Handbooks Online now provides
access at a chapter-level, making content more discoverable than ever.
These Handbooks are primarily aimed at researchers, graduate students,
and upper-level undergraduates.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE A CHAPTER, PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT THESE
GUIDELINES:
- Chapters should be no longer than 6000 words, including notes and
bibliography
- Formatted in Chicago (18th) style. - Please include a short
biographical note of 50 words. - You may include images; we are able to
include b/w images in the print edition and colour in e-book editions.
We can furnish you with details on how to include images and the process
for securing the necessary permissions.
A tentative date for the full draft chapter is December 2026, with more
details to follow soon.
If you're interested in contributing a chapter, please let us know by 1
July 2026.
We’re happy to answer any questions you might have or to talk about the
volume in more detail.
