The Department of English and Media at Birmingham City University has some permanent, full-time vacancies in the areas of Digital Film Production (1 post) and Photography (2 posts).

Ranked as the number one photography degree course in the UK for two years running (Guardian League Tables, 2024 & 25), the course is growing rapidly, built upon a rich blend of practice and theory, and a strong focus on employability. The course embraces diverse approaches to photography, encompassing a wide range of genres and empowering student-led approaches to their practice. We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Photography who is dynamic and visionary, with both creative and technical expertise. Previous teaching experience is desirable, but not essential.

The successful candidate will:

  * Have the ability to teach across all levels of the course and feed
    into curriculum development.
  * Ideally possess a teaching qualification and/or HEA Fellowship,
    though the university can also support applicants in attaining these
    after starting. Industry experience is also highly valued.
  * Be expected to understand the industry’s ever-changing landscape and
    prepare graduates for opportunities within this growing sector.

We are currently seeking a Lecturer in Digital Film Production to support our rapidly-growing film provision which is ranked in the top ten in the UK (Guardian League Tables, 2025). This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic course team that is committed to developing industry-ready graduates equipped with the creative, technical, and collaborative skills required to thrive in the fast-evolving screen industries.

The role is primarily to support the delivery of our BSc (Hons) Digital Film Production course. We are looking for a dynamic, industry practitioner and educator who has a clear understanding of the skills and workflows that prepare students for real jobs in the film and high-end television sectors. Our programme is built around hands-on production, practical and technical knowledge, and real-world application.

We welcome applicants with professional expertise in any of the following areas: cinematography, post-production, sound recording and design, studio and location production, digital workflows, or production department leadership.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate technical expertise and experience in:

  * Proven professional experience in single-camera production.
  * Up-to-date knowledge of industry-standard film and high-end
    television technologies and practices.
  * Passion for teaching and mentoring the next generation of technical
    craft practitioners.
  * Ability to deliver practice-based learning in a collaborative and
    inclusive environment.
  * Interest in course development and innovation in creative education.
