*Call for Papers for a Special Issue in Medien Journal (04/2025, Open 
Access): (Non-)Binaries in Binary Structures – The role of digital 
communication for the negotiation, participation, and representation of 
diversity *

Guest Editors: Claudia Wilhelm, Anne Reinhardt, Svenja Schäfer, Merja 
Mahrt, Kathrin Friederike Müller & Corinna Peil

The aim of this special issue is to showcase current research on 
non-binary and binary gender identities in digital media via the 
following areas: (1) identity construction and development, (2) 
participation and discourse, (3) social consequences of gender 
representations, (4) platforms, outlets, and regulation, and (5) 
methodological approaches. By juxtaposing both non-binary and binary 
perspectives, the issue aims to highlight research gaps and contribute 
to a more comprehensive understanding.

*Submission Guidelines *
We invite colleagues who would like to contribute to this special issue 
to *submit their abstract by November 15, 2024, in either German or 
English* to (regina.ausserwoeger /at/ univie.ac.at). Abstracts (max. 500 words, 
excluding references) should be submitted in Word or PDF format. 
Manuscripts must not be previously published or under review elsewhere. 
The special issue will be published open access at the end of 2025, and 
all manuscripts will undergo the Medien Journal’s standard double-blind 
peer review process. *No payment from authors will be required. *

November 15, 2024: Deadline for submission of abstracts
November 30, 2024: Invitations to submit manuscripts
February 28, 2025: Deadline for submission of manuscripts
October / November 2025: Publication of the open access issue
