In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionised many
areas, including communication and the media. From recommendation
algorithms to automated content creation systems, AI is transforming the
way we consume and produce information. These advances require a
reassessment of media and information literacy competencies, which must
also encompass access, critical understanding of and conscious
interaction with AI-based technologies.
Indeed, media and information literacy becomes even more fundamental in
a world where AI is omnipresent. Media and information literacy
competencies encompass not only the ability to consume and understand
information, but also to think critically and produce content
responsibly and safely. AI offers numerous opportunities for society,
including verifying content and analysing large volumes of data,
developing new educational tools, and supporting content creation and
curation. However, it also presents significant challenges such as the
spread and amplification of disinformation, filter bubbles and echo
chambers, ethical issues related to privacy and data security, and
technological dependency. This highlights the urgent need for citizens
to be better prepared and equipped to live/survive in this new
multimedia reality, making the most of their opportunities and acting
safely and ethically.
This thematic section of/Revista Comunicando/, entitled "Media and
Information Literacy Competences in Response to Advances in AI", aims to
explore how AI is contributing to the redefinition of media and
information literacy competencies and how citizens, educators and
professionals can prepare for these changes. This section is open to
articles that offer theoretical analyses, case studies, innovative
methodologies and practical experiences related to the topic. It is also
open to interviews, reviews and experience reports.
Topics of interest for this section include, but are not limited to:
* Impact of AI on media and information literacy: how AI technologies
are changing media and information literacy competencies
* Education and training: strategies and methodologies for teaching
media and information literacy skills in an AI-driven world
* Critical analysis of information: tools and approaches for analysing
and evaluating information generated by AI systems
* Ethics and AI in the media: ethical considerations on the use of AI
in the creation and dissemination of media content
* Technologies and mergers: case studies on new AI technologies and
their impact on communication and the media
* AI and disinformation: the role of AI in spreading disinformation
and how to fight it
* Human-AI interaction: users' experiences and perceptions when
interacting with AI systems in media contexts
* Digital inclusion and exclusion: how different groups in society
(including the most vulnerable) benefit or are harmed by AI
technologies
The works in the thematic section will be published between January and
June 2025, in a continuous edition.
All papers are subject to a double-blind peer review process. There are
no associated publication fees (article processing fees or APCs).
