*Asking about Listening - Multivocality, generations and Japanese 
virtual idols *
Rafal Zaborowski
In this talk, Dr Rafal Zaborowski (Senior Lecturer in Digital Culture, 
Department of Digital Humanities, King’s College London) will reflect on 
findings from recent publications, including the monograph Music 
Generations in the Digital Age, to argue that asking audiences about 
listening can lead to a deeper understanding of generational change and 
participation. Through an analysis of ethnographic data, with a focus on 
Japanese idols and virtual idols, Rafal will explore the impact of 
artist-fan proximity and canon on audiences’ social practices, voices 
and self-reflection.

This session will look at fandoms and how fans organize themselves in 
them. By fans, we understand an active audience which create discourses 
and contents in a community of practices. We will take case studies, 
especially TV series, to analyse fans' productions, how they created 
social bonds and discussions and how their creativity can be the motor 
for social, political or cultural activism.
