*About the Book:*

Feminism and digital media are rapidly evolving fields that intersect in complex ways. As the Internet and social media platforms become ubiquitous, feminist activists, scholars and artists are leveraging these tools to advance their goals and vision for gender equality.

Digital feminist activism involves using digital technologies and platforms to advocate for gender equality and to challenge patriarchy and systems of oppression that perpetuate gender inequality. Digital media serve as counter public spheres and solidarity networks where women can connect and learn from one another, while also challenging gender norms and breaking taboos. Digital feminist activism includes new, creative, affective, performative tactics such as hashtag campaigns, online petitions, digital storytelling, data activism, video activism etc. Social media allows women to interact with feminist movements, exchange ideas, and develop new resistance practices.

However, the affordances of digital media are limited by several factors: the rise of anti-feminist groups and misogynist culture on social media, the dominance of algorithms limiting feminist movements’ visibility on digital platforms, digital gender gap, temporality of online communication that favours political participation based on weak affinities and strong emotions (Barassi, 2015:148-149), digilantism etc.

This book brings together chapters that explore the impact of digital media on feminism across various countries and cultures. The book chapters will analyse digital feminist activism in the context of a specific country, looking at the impact of cultural and social norms, political regimes, and the colonial past of these countries on digital media and feminist activism as well as the relationship with global feminist movements.
