Film stars play a key role as mediating figures between the industry and its public and, they embody cultural and social representations of great significance in the construction of gender, class, race, age or sexual identities. Stardom allows us to move away from traditional views of film authorship and to study the historical agency of women in the media industries. Historically they have been active subjects in the public sphere, with professional careers that connect with a wide array of audiences.

This Seminar will consider proposals on any star/actress from Spain (or working in the Spanish film industry), historical or contemporary. Special attention will be paid to the figure of the actress and singer Lola Flores (1923-1995), in line with the commemoration of the centenary of her birth. Although Lola Flores is remembered as an important figure in twentieth-century Spanish popular culture, there are still few academic contributions that have delved into her career and social significance.

Moreover, Lola Flores continues to be a very present reference in contemporary Spanish culture: recent television programmes, such as the documentary Lola (Movistar+, 2020), advertising campaigns, multiple references in social networks, or debates around new international stars such as Rosalía. Such relevance is explained by her status as an empowered and groundbreaking woman, who gave visibility to subjectivities outside the hegemonic social norms. Her figure is key to understanding the history of women inside and outside the audiovisual industry and media representations of women. From an intersectional perspective, her image contributes to debates on gender and race, as her stardom was linked to the gypsy universe. In terms of class, Lola Flores' life trajectory is that of a working class woman who rose to the top of national stardom. Likewise, her stardom is also linked to discourses on age, due to her ability to reinvent herself and remain relevant and visible in an industry with strong discrimination against ageing femininities. Finally, her impact as a reference point for the LGBTIQ+ community both in her time and today is remarkable.

We encourage proposals for individual papers focused on Lola Flores or other female stars with gender and intersectional perspectives. The topics can include:

    - Media representations of gender and race.

    - Stardom and age: reconfigurations of the public image, progressive
invisibility in the industry, and limitations to work.

-Discourses and narratives on class and social mobility articulated
in historical and contemporary female stardom.

    - Stardom as a space of mediation in the debates and social progress
of minority groups, such as the Roma community or LGBTQI+ groups.

    - International circulation of stars, their cultural products and
work as agents in processes of cultural hybridisation.

    - Stars as agents of modernisation and as spaces of negotiation
between the local and the transnational.

    - Stars as producers of meanings around family dynasties and their
symbolic capital within the cultural industries.

    - Stars and discourses on the national and the transnational, both
in terms of production, circulation and reception.

    - Stars as vehicles for cultural artifacts of nostalgia and
    (post)memory within popular culture.

    - Appropriations and re-readings in the digital environment of stars
within minority communities and subcultures, such as feminist,
    racial or camp appropriations.

    - Transmedia stars: relations between cinema, record industry, live
    performances, etc.
