For those who might be interested, there is a vacancy we are currently advertising here at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden for a Senior Lecturer in Musicology. It is a permanent position within the Aesthetics unit - therefore reporting directly to me as head of the unit. Whilst a knowledge of Swedish or another Scandinavian language would be very helpful, we are open to considering international candidates who would be willing to learn Swedish within two years.

Senior lecturer in musicology

The Department of Cultural Sciences is a multidisciplinary department spanning ethnology, film studies, gender studies, art and visual studies, cultural studies and musicology. The department also offers two bachelor's programmes; one in Cultural Studies and one in Media, Aesthetics and Cultural Entrepreneurship. There are also two Master's programmes, Gendering Practices and Culture and Democracy.

Subject
Musicology

Subject description
The musicology programme at the University of Gothenburg looks at music from the perspectives of musical analysis, music history, media theory, sociology, ethnology and cultural criticism. Teaching is mainly in Swedish. The subject has a broad research profile, specialising in music and media studies, ethnomusicology, sociology of music, popular music studies, music and democracy, film music and soundtrack studies, music history and music aesthetics.

Duties
Duties consist of teaching in the various fields of musicology at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. In addition to lectures, seminars, thesis supervision and examinations, teaching also includes course responsibility, course development, course administration and competence development in the field of education. Teaching may be both campus-based and online.

The post also includes research time, which the holder of the post is expected to use on their own research, publication activities, applications for external research funding and competence development in the field of research, thus contributing to the development of the subject and the department. The post may also include management duties such as subject coordinator and, depending on the specialisation of the employee, teaching on the department's bachelor’s and master’s programmes.

To contribute towards a good working environment and the development of the department, you are expected to be physically present and participate in day-to-day work and the workplace community to a great extent.

Qualifications
Qualifications for employment as a senior lecturer are specified in Chapter 4, Sections 3–4 of the Higher Education Ordinance here and the University of Gothenburg's own appointment procedure here.

You are eligible for appointment as a senior lecturer in musicology if you have demonstrated teaching skills and have completed a doctoral degree in musicology or have equivalent academic merits or other skills relevant to the subject content of the post and the duties involved in the position.

Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria for employment as a senior lecturer are set out in Chapter 4, Section 3-4 of the Higher Education Ordinance here and in the University of Gothenburg’s appointment procedure here.

In the assessment, equal weight is afforded to teaching and academic skills. Good collaboration skills are valued highly, as is the ability to pursue matters independently.

When selecting between qualified applicants, great importance shall be attached to

Documented and proven ability to teach and supervise in musicology at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Documented ability to lead and participate in course development work in musicology at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Documented national and international research activity (e.g. participation with papers at national and international conferences, publication of peer-reviewed academic publications, participation in national and international research networks) Documented ability to bring in external research funding and head research projects. Documented good collaboration skills both internally with colleagues and in external contexts. Documented good communication skills in English and Swedish (or a related Nordic language).

Other merits

Documented experience of management positions (e.g. Director of Studies).
    Documented ability to supervise at PhD level.
Good knowledge of the Swedish education system and the ability to teach in Swedish or a related language.
    Good ability to communicate musicological research.

In addition to expert assessment, the selection process may involve test lectures, interviews and reference checks.

The position
The position is a full-time, permanent appointment as a senior lecturer. All permanent appointments are subject to a probationary period. Admission by agreement.

If you do not possess higher education teaching qualifications in accordance with the requirements at the University of Gothenburg (PIL101, PIL102 and PIL103) at the time of application, such qualifications must be validated or the specified training completed within one year of commencing the post (https://pil.gu.se/resurser/meriter).
