“Estudios sobre el Mensaje Periodístico”: Call for papers on “Risk and emergency communication: analysing strategies and discourses in the digital age”

Until February 28, 2023 the call for papers for the journal “Estudios sobre el Mensaje Periodístico” on “Risk and emergency communication: analysing strategies and discourses in the digital age” is open.

The issue is edited by Mª Luisa Sánchez-Calero (Universidad Complutendse de Madrid, Spain) and Gisela Gonçalves (Universidade da Beira Interior/LabCom).

Communication in Risk and Emergency situations is increasingly developing. According to the Global Assessment Report (GAR2022), published by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in May 2022, between 350 and 500 medium and large-scale disasters have occurred each year over the past two decades. Figures provided by prestigious databases on recent research also demonstrate the upward trend of this object of study. In Web of Science (WoS), with the search term "emergency communication", 36.4% of the articles have been published between 2012 and 2019. In WoS itself, if we reduce the search to "emergency communication" and "social media", 88.8% of the publications have been made between 2012 and 2019. Likewise, in other more prestigious international and national databases such as Scopus, Dialnet or the publisher SAGE, in all of them, between 85 and 95% of the publications on "emergency communication" and "social media" were produced between 2012 and 2019.

Internationally, contributions to this area of knowledge have been made by authors such as: Sutton, Renshaw, Vos, et al., (2019); Brandt, Turner-McGrievy, Friedman, et al., (2019); Liu, Kar, Zhang, et al., (2019); Kim, Bae, Hastak (2018); Bennet (2018); Sellnow et al.). In Spain, the contributions in this area by authors such as: Percastre-Mendizábal, Pont-Sorribes and Suau-Gomila (2019); Villodre and Criado (2019); Sánchez-Calero (2017; 2018); Chivite-Fernández and Serrano-Rodríguez (2013); Gonzalo and Farré (2011) or Castelló (2010) are noteworthy. In all these studies, common nuances can be observed in the approach and definition of the concept of risk and disaster communication. Among them: the loss of protagonism in the control and distribution of information in emergency situations of the traditional media in favor of social media and the new citizen journalism.

Likewise, the significant increase in new information and communication technologies (ICTs) and their use in new spaces for social organisation create new opportunities for societies, business organisations and communities to increase resilience to risk vulnerability.

With this new monograph, “Estudios sobre el Mensaje Periodístico” seeks to promote analysis, criticism and examination. As well as suggesting proposals and protocols on the coverage of Risk and Disasters addressed by traditional media, governments, and public institutions in the context of the digital era. We are looking for papers that examine different discourses in these times of increasing interconnectedness, but with growing disruption and misinformation. For this reason, contributions will be selected for this monograph that not only address a highly topical issue, but also contributes with their vision of risk and disaster communication, from a professional and/or theoretical point of view.
