[Commlist] Alphaville 21 - Mining Memories: New Explorations in Cinema, Memory and the Past published

Thu Aug 05 19:09:55 GMT 2021

We’re delighted to announce publication of the new issue of /Alphaville/, the peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the Department of Film and Screen Media at UCC:

*/Alphaville/**Issue 21 – **https://doi.org/10.33178/alpha.21* <https://doi.org/10.33178/alpha.21>

This issue of Alphaville on /Mining Memories: New Explorations in Cinema, Memory and the Past/, edited by Gwenda Young, opens with the Editor’s timely commemoration of the work of Bertrand Tavernier, who died in March of this year – a filmmaker “who made seminal interventions in the ongoing critical debate concerning memory and history”, as Young writes in her Editorial. The issue comprises five articles by Frances Guerin, Sue Vice and Dominic Williams, Elzbieta Buslowska, Marie Krämer, and Maud Ceuterick on the theme of memory in film and new media. The theme is also addressed in this issue’s podcast, presenting an extended conversation between Young and Tadhg O’Sullivan (/To the Moon/, 2020; /The Great Wall/, 2015; /Yximalloo/, 2014, with Feargal Ward), an Irish artist and filmmaker often working with literary sources and the cinematic archive, whose films seek to evoke the timelessness of human experience and to illuminate the present moment through ideas from the distant past.

The issue is completed by a dossier titled /History of Cinemagoing: Archives and Projects/ edited by Pierluigi Ercole, Daniela Treveri-Gennari and Lies Van de Vijver, and a selection of book reviews edited by Jill Murphy.
