*British cinema and genre: new approaches to popular film*

Applications are invited from individuals in possession of a BA and MA for a PhD project about British film and genre at Northumbria University. Supervised by Dr Johnny Walker, the project will enhance understanding of popular British film by offering a revisionist perspective on areas of which there are extant studies or by examining areas that are hitherto unexplored.

While Dr Walker is an expert on horror and exploitation cinema, the focus of the proposed PhD need not fall within these areas, nor be restricted to one genre. Any genre, historical period, or industrial/social context will be considered. The project must demonstrate an original contribution to knowledge. Projects which evidence methodological innovation are encouraged.

Proposals may address:

·The relationship between British cinema and genre theory

·The relationship between industrial practices and genre cinema

·The history of British cinema and genre

·Recent developments in British genre cinema

·Key or overlooked figures or companies in British genre cinema (e.g. filmmakers, producers, distributors, actors)

·The relationship between British genre cinema and technology (e.g., production, distribution)

Prospective students may contact Dr Walker with any queries ((johnny.walker /at/ northumbria.ac.uk) <mailto:(johnny.walker /at/ northumbria.ac.uk)>). More information about Dr Walker and his research interests can be found on his staff profile page: https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/our-staff/w/dr-johnny-walker/ <https://www.findaphd.com/common/clickCount.aspx?theid=4226&type=186&DID=1151&url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.northumbria.ac.uk%2fabout-us%2four-staff%2fw%2fdr-johnny-walker%2f>

As noted above, the studentship is available to Home students and includes a full stipend, paid for three years at RCUK rates (for 2020/21, this is £15,285 pa) and full tuition fees.

• Be a UK National (meeting residency requirements), or
• have settled status, or
• have pre-settled status (meeting residency requirements), or
• have indefinite leave to remain or enter.
