*Conference Description*

In 1921, the first Chinese-made long feature film was released – /Yan Ruisheng /(闫瑞生), directed by Ren Pengnian. In commemoration of this event, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China will be hosting the conference ‘_100 Years of Chinese Film & Screen’_, Friday May 14 and Saturday May 15, 2021, which will bring together scholars and practitioners to celebrate and examine the development of Chinese film studies and screen studies over the past century. In doing so, it aims to analyse the history of Chinese language film, assess the current landscape of Chinese film studies, and chart the possible futures of Chinese and other Sinophone cinemas. The keynote will be delivered virtually by Professor Chris Berry (King’s College London). Titled 'Welcome to the Sinosphere’, it asks what Chinese Cinema is in an era of Chinese films made in multiple languages around the world and competing, nationally-based globalization projects.

Due to the current restrictions on travel, the conference will be a hybrid in-person/online event. We invite English-language submissions on any aspect of Chinese film and screen research, from scholars and practitioners, including:

§Chinese film/television histories

§Chinese stars and celebrities
