We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant (0.8 FTE) or two Research Assistants (each 0.4 FTE) in the Division of Media, Communication and Performing Arts at Queen Margaret University. The aim of the research project is to investigate how COVID-19 has had a strategic impact on film festivals in Scotland as they have had to shift to digital modes of film exhibition.

The role holder will work together with the project leads. We are seeking either one person for both phases, or this role can be split between two people for the first and second phases.

The first phase of the project focuses on the landscape and industry response. This specifically involves:

  * Accumulation of quantitative and numeric information about the
impacts of COVID-19 on the Scottish film festivals environment to
understand the challenges of the current landscape.
  * Qualitative approaches to collect the perspectives and experiences
of film festival producers and organisations about the impacts of
the virus on their operations, programming, future strategies, and
    financial situations/sustainability.

The second phase of the project focuses on audience and community response. This specifically involves:

  * Analysis of existing evaluations of audiences at case study
    organisations.
  * Qualitative approaches to collect the perspectives and experiences
of film festival audiences and communities about the impacts of the
virus on their social and cultural lives, with particular attention
paid to festivals with a significant community value (Africa in
Motion, Discovery Film Festival, SQIFF) and questions around
    diversity, inclusivity and accessibility.

The successful candidate/s will have experience of undertaking qualitative (Phase 1 & 2) and/or quantitative (Phase 1) research and will have an understanding of the critical fields of film and/or festivals. Together with excellent communication skills and the ability to use their own initiative, the role holder will also possess excellent analytical and written skills and will have demonstrable experience in producing written reports to a high standard.
