The School of Communication and Multimedia Studies at Florida Atlantic University seeks a tenure track Assistant Professor in rhetorical studies to teach in both a BA program in Communication and Civic Life and an MA in Communication. In addition to preparation in rhetorical theory and criticism, the ideal candidate will have a rhetorical approach to courses concerned with issues of citizenship, civic engagement, and civic life in national and international contexts. Applicants should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: rhetorical democracy and citizenship; communication and civic life; rhetoric and social change; deliberation and democracy; and rhetoric, diversity, and marginalized voices. The ideal candidate will serve as Coordinator of Graduate Teaching Assistants in Communication Studies (mainly for Public Speaking), which would also include teaching an annual graduate class, Theory and Practice of Teaching Communication, and coordinating civic engagement activities within the School (e.g., speaker’s corner events, public debates, etc.). A one-course release is granted for such coordination.

The normal teaching load is five courses per year (a 3/2 or 2/3 load). The TA Coordinator role prescribes one annual course assignment and one annual course release. Teaching options for the other three courses include classes such as: Introduction to Communication and Civic Life; Rhetorical Analyses of Democracy (intensive writing class); New Media and Civic Discourse; Publics and Counterpublics; American Multicultural Discourse; Rhetoric of Social Protest; Argumentation and Debate; the Rhetoric of Argument (intensive writing class); Feminist Rhetorical Theory (graduate level), or other courses in the Communication Studies BA or MA degree sequences. New course proposals in areas of specialization are also welcome.

A PhD in Communication or related field from an accredited institution is required by time of appointment.  The salary will be commensurate with experience. /The deadline for application is January 10, 2020, by 8:00 a.m./ (the application portal closes automatically at that time).  This position is open until filled and may close without prior notice.

Degrees from outside the United States must be validated by an organization belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Service (NACES), with an indication of the documents the evaluation was prepared from (official transcripts, diplomas, dissertation abstracts). The evaluation should be scanned and electronically attached to one's application as with other US-based transcripts.

Prior to appointment, the candidate must submit official, sealed transcripts from all institutions where graduate coursework was attempted, whether or not a degree was obtained, as well as an original NACES evaluation, if applicable. Transcripts must be issued to Florida Atlantic University not to you as the student. A background check will be required for the candidate selected for this position. This position is subject to funding.

The School of Communication and Multimedia Studies is in the College of Arts and Letters.  The School enrolls approximately 1,300 undergraduate majors of diverse backgrounds seeking either a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies or a Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Studies (with sequence options in Multimedia Journalism or Film, Video and New Media).
