The conference proposes to address questions about diversity and any of
its forms of representation, thus establishing a dialogue which will
constitute the central theme of the International Interdisciplinary
Conference of the Faculty of Humanities, Communication and Documentation
of the University Carlos III of Madrid, which will take place between
March 31 and April 3, 2020 at the Getafe campus (Madrid).

Diversity itself is a varied and plural object of study, which can be
approached from multiple perspectives: gender studies; cultural studies;
postcolonial studies; studies related to disability, age, transnational
issues, ethnicity, and migratory movements, among others. It is a
subject that raises infinite questions:  what are the meeting spaces
between social, political and cultural practices linked to diversity?
How is diversity represented in different artistic disciplines? How do
strategies of self-representation or representation of identity of
others work? What solutions arise from the experience of the present to
face future challenges related to diversity?

This Conference proposes to reflect upon diversity along the following axes:

Horizons

This block invites proposals that develop ideas related to the
prospective dimension of diversity. When we speak of the prospective, we
refer to a time that is not necessarily linked only to the future, but
can also be rooted in the utopias of the present. The horizon of change
is redrawn in the interstices of the real that anticipate or imagine it.
In a way, any practice or representation of diversity opens up a range
of possibilities that project new ways of conceiving it, of solving or
managing the tensions that the plurality and difference open up in the
more or less stagnant and homogeneous policies and classifications with
which we usually apprehend identity constructions.

Spaces

Any reading focused on space necessarily refers to diversity and the
diverse. Paying attention to the codes that partake in the composition
of spaces, we propose to contemplate the factors and the realities that
contribute to the integration and to the visibility of certain types of
diversity and, simultaneously, to the deferral and the concealment of
others. The importance of diversity validates an investigation of the
power structures and a questioning of the responsibilities that
guidelines and practices may have in the hierarchy of diversities
(mainly functional, cultural, biological or sexual) and their spatial
manifestation, as well as the repercussions and consequences that derive
from it, both from a physical and a perceptual point of view.

Strategies

This block welcomes research results that address representative
practices of diversity found in literature, architecture and art, film,
television, the press, digital media, social networks, etc. If identity
is created through representation, what are the strategies with which
our identities appear as diverse? One can even take a step back to ask
whether diversity, as a multiple and hybrid phenomenon, is in itself
representable. Today, more than ever, it is crucial to carry out and
study rhizomatic and decentered practices that bestow voice and look
upon those misrepresented by History. This difficult task requires
strategies: how do the politics of representation operate? What are the
social practices that might shed light on specific aspects of this
sophisticated puzzle of our contemporary identity?

Proposal submissions

This conference welcomes scholarly presentations of individual or
collective character (panels of four papers) both in Spanish or English.
The submission of proposals to the Organizing Committee of the
Conference for consideration and potential acceptance will be made
through the platform on the page

Authors are requested to submit their proposals of a maximum length of
400 words and a brief academic profile of up to 150 words. The deadline
for submitting proposals is December 2, 2019. The papers may be
presented in Spanish or English.

The conference fee will be 75 euros for professors and researchers and
30 euros for students (postgraduate and graduate). The payment can be
made once the acceptance of the proposal has been confirmed, until the
opening of the conference, through the registration platform that will
be available, after the evaluation of abstracts, in January of 2020.

Proceedings of the conference will be published in digital format with
ISBN number, after additional selection made by a committee of evaluators.
