The term “indie” has a well-established history of use across the realm 
of video games, music and film. However, discussions of “indie” often 
raise questions rather than delivering terminological agreement. 
Furthermore, many discussions suggest that “indie” is not merely an 
abbreviation of “independent”, but rather has various meanings to 
different people throughout the last several decades. Whilst it is 
perhaps tempting to confine the term “indie” to straightforward 
characteristics, such a simple definition prevents a greater 
understanding of “indie” and the distinctive qualities that come with 
the “indie” term. When applied to the study of animation, what is meant 
by “indie”: team size, budget, design philosophy, aesthetics?

This one-day interdisciplinary symposium invites proposals for 
twenty-minute papers, 5-minute micro-talks or video essays that explore 
the themes of “indie” animation. We also invite the submission of 
posters, we recommend this being A0 (841 x 1189) and be accompanied by a 
5-minute summarisation of your work. Topics might include, but are not 
limited to:

  * The production of indie
  * The history of indie
  * Indie audience
  * Indie as a genre
  * Indie as a development approach
  * Indie across animation
  * Interactive animation
  * Video games

Speakers are invited to submit a *250-word abstract* and *short 
biography (max 100 words)* to Darius Malek (*(d.malek333 /at/ canterbury.ac.uk)

The deadline for proposals is: 9 December 2019
